70 years of innovation

In 1955, CEJN revolutionised the industry with a groundbreaking patent that redefined quick coupling history. Since then, we have grown into a global leader in quick coupling solutions. Over the past 70 years, we have delivered high-quality, innovative products that empower industries worldwide.

History

In 1955, Carl Erik Josef Nyberg (C.E.J.N.) designed and patented a revolutionary quick connect coupling that overcame many of the shortcomings of previous designs. It dramatically simplified handling and provided reliable, efficient connections.

Following World War II, compressed air was increasingly used as an energy source for pneumatic tools and equipment. Leaking and inefficient couplings were a common problem, and one also experienced by our founder Carl, who struggled to keep up with his hourly piece-work as a tool grinder at the Royal Armour Regiment. Right from birth Carl had the mind of an inventor and he set out to invent a new, improved coupling. This new product became the basis for a large part of CEJN’s modern range of products as well as the starting point for our global growth.

Our design is based on small external and large internal dimensions. Ever since Carl invented that first coupling, patented in 1955, we have been expanding our product lines, from compressed air initially to now include and cover media such as breathing air, hydraulic oil and fluids. We concentrate on developing innovative engineering solutions with a focus on safety as well as continuing to improve standard products and designing new ones.

At CEJN, we are united by our five core values: safety, environment, quality, innovation and performance. They are our cornerstones and define who we are, how we work, what we believe in and what we stand for.

CEJN The Story (ENG)

It was in the basement of his house that founder Carl Erik Josef Nyberg started CEJN in 1955. On 22 June 1955, the first patent was registered: quick connect couplings for pipes, hoses, rods and similar. At the same time, Carl had begun to develop an entirely new quick coupling, and the first lathe was purchased. In 1956, the first blowgun was developed. Over the next few years, the business went from a basement company to a well-established business with an expanded product portfolio.

During the 1960s, a new generation of air couplings was developed, and sales cooperation of CEJN products in Europe began. The first plastic blowgun was launched in 1967, and the first quick coupling for high-pressure hydraulics was introduced in 1969. By this time, the 300 m² workshop facility in Tornsberg had become too small and thus expanded with another 300 m² to meet the growing needs for warehousing, assembly and machinery for tool manufacture. In the late 1960s, CEJN also began marketing the first spiral hose.

In 1970, the business moved to newly built factory premises of 1,700 m² in the Hasslums industrial area in Skövde, and in the years to come, several expansions were carried out. In the same year, the founder, Carl, tragically died of a heart attack, aged only 58. The Nyberg siblings decide to continue the work of their father, and their brother, Ove, became the new CEO. On the 16th of February 1971, CEJN’s first global sales company, CEJN Product-GmbH, was registered. It would later expand with offices in Switzerland and France.

The 1980s was a period of significant technological change. The lathes were hugely successful and this led to the introduction of three shifts. By this time, CEJN had developed a wide product range, which now included quick couplings for high-pressure hydraulics up to 3,000 bar and a new version of the blowgun, series 205 – a version that was likely to become the world’s most copied blowgun. Global sales offices in the US, Italy and Singapore opened.

During the 1990s, CEJN always strived to be one step ahead of its competitors, which led to an expansion by 4,000 m² and automation of most of the assembly operations. In 1994, CEJN acquired Trio Perfekta in Lönsboda, an existing supplier of lathe components, including surface treatment. In 1997, the WEO plug-in was launched, which was the starting point for CEJN’s investment in medium-pressure hydraulics, one of the company’s most important business segments today.

The 2000s started with the launch of the 208 blowgun, a product that has come to define the global landscape of professional blowguns: high flow, lightweight and ergonomic, robust design and high-precision flow control. In 2001, a new European central warehouse in Germany was established, and new sales offices were opened in the Nordic countries, Australia and Brazil. Investments were also made in Asia, where quick coupling solutions and hoses for high-pressure hydraulics, especially for the marine business segment, were gaining momentum, leading to sales companies opening in China, Japan, Korea and India.

In 2013, eSafe, the world’s best safety coupling for compressed air, was launched on the global market. Millions of eSafe have been sold since then and it is the product that most people associate CEJN with. In the late 2010s, CEJN also started launching quick connectors for liquid cooling, and in 2018, ultraFLOW, a quick connector for liquid cooling of electronics, was launched. In 2019, a decision was taken to make the largest investment in CEJN’s history: building a new 3,200 m² central warehouse to meet increased customer needs.

In 2021, the new central warehouse, 15 metres high and 3,200 m² large, was completed. The new warehouse brings added value to CEJN’s customers through new production areas and product ranges, improved logistics and distribution, direct deliveries, and full control of the entire supply chain. In the same year, an all-time high in sales was achieved when the turnover passed EUR 100M. In 2023, the bridge was installed, and today, it is a well-known landmark in the area. Today, CEJN is led by the third generation of owners, with Marcus Allerbjer, grandson of founder Carl, as CEO.

Core Values

Safety

Safety is vital to our business. It is not merely optional, but is essential to everything we do and we take responsibility for the safety of our customers and users. A safe work place is our top priority and we are not satisfied until our customers no longer have to choose between safety and high-performance products. Recent product launches and developments such as eSafe and the alert-ring on our Ultra High-Pressure couplings are proof of that.

Safety

Environment

Protecting the environment is essential to us and is something we take very seriously. Developing energy-efficient products is a matter of course for us, as this goes hand-in-hand with putting less pressure on the compressor. Spill-free products are another objective, to avoid contamination of the environment and hydraulic systems. Our Swedish production facilities are run on wind power and CEJN’s aim is to work in an as environmentally friendly way as possible. We implement an Environment Management System with ISO 14001 requirements as our minimum standard.

We put our customers first and strive to exceed their expectations. Our operations have been certified in accordance with the ISO 9001 quality management system standard since 1995. This prioritises, among other things, customer focus, employee commitment and continuous improvements.

By unlocking the creativity of our staff and their interest in experimenting with new technologies we are constantly stretching the boundaries of what is possible. With six decades behind us and a number of different innovations in our arsenal, our global organisation remains one step ahead. This includes how we operate, the technologies we apply and our commercial approach. Innovation by performance.

Performance

Delivering products that provide a high level of performance is deeply rooted in our DNA, and was one of the reasons why the first CEJN coupling was designed. The surrounding world is constantly evolving, presenting us with new challenges every day, and that’s why flexibility is one of our guiding principles. We work closely with our customers during the development phase and guarantee to provide them with the best and safest performance products on the market.
