FAQ - Thermal Control Technology

CEJN has over 60 years of experience in developing and manufacturing high-quality quick disconnect couplings. Since the very start we have been dedicated to improving quality in production and the characteristics in design; from minimizing pressure drop and leakage to taking overall responsibility for important questions like safety and reducing waste.

With all our gathered knowledge during our existence, we offer leak free, energy saving solutions for every unique customer and application we meet in thermal control. Today our focus within the segment of thermal control is on data centers, digital transmitters, renewable energy and power electronics. But as an engineering oriented company we are open for any kind of dialogue. You are very welcome to contact us here at CEJN with your liquid challenges.

Our most frequently asked questions

Why use Quick disconnect couplings for liquid cooling systems?

  • Quick disconnect couplings make it much easier for our customers to perform test runs on complete cooling systems before delivery.
  • Onsite installation will be much quicker and smoother if the system comes prefilled with cooling liquid.
  • Service & maintenance during the life time of system will be quicker when using quick disconnects.
  • Performance upgrades of the electronic equipment can be carried out quicker since “hot swap” means that you can disconnect sections of the equipment without interruptions on the entire system.

Why is High Flow in combination with Low Pressure Drop important?
From our customer’s perspective low pressure drop is crucial since all components in a liquid cooling system creates pressure drop which adds up to a pump pressure. As our quick disconnects have the lowest possible pressure drop, we help the customer to minimize the size of their pump and fluid lines. This decreases initial system investment cost and operating cost during service life.

Let´s take for example; it´s important in a data center to manage the temperature of the microchips. High-flow, low pressure drop couplings aid in this, by dissipating the heat more efficiently and thereby improve processor speed and stability. The result is less energy waste, thus decreasing the total cost. So, high flow and low pressure drop are two core elements when it comes to system optimization with the goal to get the heat out of the system as quick as possible.

What about spill or leakage?
When working with electronics of any kind, 100 % non-spill products are the only option. Non-spill performance is tested in our lab under harsh environments, such as low pressures and low temperatures. We test product reliability and lifetime performance in our endurance test rigs. Finally, all our products are 100% checked with leak tests and functional tests before delivery.

What solutions can we see from CEJN?
First, all our products are developed to maximize flow and minimize pressure drop!In our thermal control range you find traditional ball lock couplings, blind mate couplings, multi couplings. We stream-line our coupling design to minimize the weight and overall size of the installed cooling system. We offer a selection of different body materials such as anodized aluminum, stainless steel, brass or other customer requested materials in combination with a variety of sealing compounds to ensure compatibility with the cooling fluid of the customer’s system. To ensure alignment with our customer’s needs we have the ability to swiftly tailor design, using our experienced engineering department. .

What is the future of Quick Disconnect Couplings in liquid cooling?
The need for more efficient cooling is clear. Several media are on the market ranging from mineral based oils, glycol water to special engineered fluids. Focus on coupling performance is a logical step upon further and broad adaptation of liquid cooling. Optimizing the combination of size, flow and pressure drop of quick disconnect couplings influences the system design radically and ensures optimized Total Cost of Ownership in operation.

Are the CEJN Quick disconnect couplings compatible with engineered fluids like 3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluids?
Our couplings are used in all kinds of environments, including applications using Novec fluids. We are constantly testing and optimizing engineered fluid compatibilities with both our customers as well as with the fluid suppliers. If you have some special cooling media, please contact us for the best Quick disconnect alignment.

What solutions does CEJN have for harsh environments?
Our standard ranges cover most common materials like anodized aluminium, stainless steel, brass but we even have the ability to safely transfer media that are more aggressive. We even have solutions for the safe transfer of aggressive sulphuric acids. Our highly skilled engineers are able to find solutions that are challenging for most, maximizing cooperation with compound suppliers to take the extra mile. We have got the standard solutions but are solution providers by heart.

Why are some of CEJN’s couplings 2-hand operated and others not?
Our new range is focused to be used in applications where sensitive electronics are cooled with liquid. It is extremely important that the valve closes properly when the couplings are disconnected to prevent spill. To put it simple; 1-hand operated couplings have a higher risk of blocking the valve movement. So the 2-hand operation is all about extreme safety.
