MAN demands quality and safety: "You have to be able to trust the equipment"

MAN Diesel & Turbo, a world-leading provider of large-bore diesel engines, and CEJN have been working together on ultra-high-pressure solutions for more than 40 years under the tagline “safety first”. During the spring of 2018, CEJN is launching an upgraded range of ultra-high-pressure hydraulic couplings, and MAN is the first to give their opinion of the new locking feature that completely eliminates unintentional disconnection.

The MAN Prime Serve Academy

The Prime Serve Academy is a training facility located in Copenhagen and other cities around the world. The target group is crew members who work on MAN engines. “Whenever we develop something new, we need to provide the appropriate training that comes with the product,” says Per Pallisgaard, Head of Product Safety and Manager for Maintenance Tools, MAN Copenhagen.

Working in an engine room demands a high level of expertise and awareness from the crew. Especially awareness on how to behave for instance around tools and high pressure. “The solution is adequate training and, second, being able to trust the equipment at hand. You need to understand that a pressure of 2500 bar is a potentially deadly force,” Per explains.

Safety mindset of MAN when choosing components and suppliers

As an engineer, you have to consider the engine and the person using the equipment. This puts a lot of pressure on MAN, as a safety-focused company. An engine out of service is nothing anyone wants to see, and MAN tries its utmost to prevent this. The mindset is that if anything goes wrong, it should go wrong the right way. “If you don’t manufacture the final product yourself, you have to specify the requirements to make everything work,” Per declares.

MAN demands quality and safety, which is the same mindset as CEJN, and the two companies have been mutually cooperating over the past 40 years on refining existing products. “Initially, it was about raising the pressure, whereas later on, focus shifted to improving safety in different ways,” says Per. He continues, “When it comes to subcontractors, it is all about cooperation and trust, which is what we get from CEJN.”

“The new locking ring makes the end-user feel more secure,
which is one of our goals”

MAN’s view of the new locking feature from CEJN

MAN appreciates the safety mindset of CEJN, and the new locking feature exemplifies a measure taken by a responsible and trustworthy company. From an end-user perspective, it considerably improves safety, and MAN praises the fact that there is a visual check to ensure that the connection is correct. “From time to time we hear stories of unintentional disconnection,” says Per, continuing, “The new locking ring makes the end-user feel more secure, which is one of our goals.”
