Multi-Connection for Paper Mill

The multi-connection plate integrates multiple hydraulic lines in a specially designed multi-connection nipple plate to eliminate the risk of cross connection. The plate is used in the paper manufacturing process to make disconnection easier during maintenance and cleaning and to avoid cross connection.

Elimination of cross-connection

Paper mills are generally tough environments. With fixed maintenance intervals, each part of the machine undergoes rigorous cleaning to maintain a high paper quality. In this case, the press rolls, controlled by hydraulics, have six individual sections that allow for separate manipulation of the paper thickness in each section. These rolls are removed from the machine during maintenance. If the hydraulic lines are mistakenly cross-connected after maintenance, the hydraulic controls would manipulate the wrong section with costly results: discarded paper and additional downtime to correct the problem.

Customer specification

CEJN received a detailed specification from the paper manufacturer. The quick coupling connections needed to have a working pressure of 100 bar, function with hydraulic oil in a very moist environment, and be able to withstand cleaning with high-pressure water mixed with acid. Most importantly of all – we needed to come up with a solution for proper connection.

Material and construction

By integrating the connection lines in one multi-console we were immediately able to eliminate cross-connection. Our design consists of a stainless steel plate attached to the press roll to integrate the nipples in the roll. The corresponding couplings and hoses are secured in a removable plate. The design of the plates ensures that connection is only possible in one way, thus guaranteeing correct connection every time.

The environment and high-pressure cleaning using a mixture of water and acid demanded a stainless steel solution. But as we discovered in our analysis of the application, the water cleaning process only took place while the hydraulic lines were connected. With this knowledge, we were able to design a product with a stainless steel exterior and a steel interior, providing the customer with a more cost-effective solution. The couplings and nipples used are a special hybrid of CEJN’s high-performance X-65 and X-66 hydraulic leak-free products, meaning there is no hydraulic oil spillage during connection and disconnection.
